Interior of a Farmhouse with Figures and Animals, dated to around 1680 and representing one of Teniers's latest works, demonstrates his continued engagement with the rural domestic subject matter he had explored since the 1630s. By 1680 Teniers was in his late seventies — a remarkable age for an active painter in any period — and his late farmhouse interiors show a slightly looser, more abbreviated handling that reflects both age and the accumulated confidence of a long career. Farmhouse interiors allowed him to combine figure painting, animal observation, and still life within a single unified composition: the figures going about domestic tasks, the animals (chickens, a dog, a pig) inhabiting the same space, the tools and implements of rural life arranged as practical objects with incidental compositional purpose.

Oil on panel with the slightly looser brushwork of Teniers's late manner, individual forms suggested rather than precisely defined. Warm interior light from a doorway or window organises the space and unifies the varied elements. Animals are handled with the same observational attention as figures, their textures differentiated from each other and from the rougher surfaces of the farmhouse interior. The palette has cooled somewhat from the warm amber tones of his mid-career works.
