La fuente, Buñol
Joaquín Sorolla·1895
Historical Context
Painted in 1895, this canvas from Buñol — a town in the Valencia region famous today for its tomato festival but then a quiet agricultural community — captures a public fountain, one of the nuclei around which village social life organised itself. Water sources were focal points for daily gatherings: women came to wash, children played, and the fountain's constant flow provided a visual and aural rhythm to public space. By 1895 Sorolla had largely shed the dark social realism of canvases like 'And They Still Say Fish is Expensive' (1894) and was moving toward the luminous practice that would define his mature style. The Buñol fountain subject is transitional — still attentive to the social dimension of water in rural life, but increasingly interested in light as it plays across wet stone and moving water. The architectural setting of a traditional Spanish village fountain — stone basin, iron fittings, surrounding flagstones — provided Sorolla with a compact compositional subject where human and built environment met in characteristic Mediterranean light.
Technical Analysis
Stone, water, and iron in direct sunlight offered Sorolla multiple surface textures to differentiate through paint handling. Wet stone receives cool blue-grey treatment; the water itself carries sky reflections as horizontal pale touches; the surrounding plaza is rendered in warm ochres and creams.
Look Closer
- ◆Water pouring from the fountain spout catches direct light and is rendered with a few confident pale strokes
- ◆Worn stone around the basin shows the patina of generations of use through complex mottled paint surface
- ◆Cast shadows on the surrounding pavement follow the irregular geometry of old worn flagstones
- ◆Any figures present at the fountain are observed in the unstudied postures of routine daily activity
