La siesta

Painted in 1911, this depiction of the midday siesta belongs to Sorolla's mature celebration of Mediterranean leisure — a subject he returned to across his career, finding in the sleeping or resting figure in dappled shade one of his most satisfying chromatic problems. The siesta in the Spanish Mediterranean was not mere laziness but a physiologically rational response to the intense summer heat: the hours between roughly two and five in the afternoon were genuinely unsuitable for physical activity, and the culture of rest during this period was deeply embedded. Sorolla's siesta canvases romanticise without falsifying — the genuine pleasures of shade, cool surfaces, and drowsy heat that the subjects communicate are pleasures the painter himself shared as a Mediterranean man. By 1911 he was engaged with the Hispanic Society mural project, and the siesta canvases offered a contrast to that ambitious public programme — intimate, private, resolved in a single session's concentrated effort.

Dappled shade created by overhead vegetation was one of Sorolla's most refined chromatic problems: the light-and-dark patterning of filtered sunlight required him to work simultaneously with multiple small-scale colour transitions while maintaining compositional unity. The reclining figure in this light becomes a complex mosaic of warm and cool patches.
