Lady Writing a Letter with her Maid by Johannes Vermeer

Lady Writing a Letter with her Maid

Johannes Vermeer·1670

Historical Context

Vermeer's Lady Writing a Letter with her Maid from around 1670, in the National Gallery of Ireland, depicts two women whose contrasting activities—one writing furiously, the other gazing out the window—create a tension between urgency and calm. The painting was stolen twice from Russborough House in Ireland before being donated to the gallery. X-ray analysis reveals Vermeer originally included a painting of the Finding of Moses on the back wall, later replaced by the current larger canvas.

Technical Analysis

The composition divides attention between the two figures through contrasting light and posture, with the maid's still profile against the bright window serving as a counterpoint to the writing woman's intensity. Vermeer's late palette of cool grays and greens creates a restrained, meditative atmosphere.
