' Landscape ', known as ' La Maison de Corot in Ville-d'Avray '

Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot maintained a country house at Ville-d'Avray, a village west of Paris, where he returned repeatedly throughout his career, painting the quiet ponds and silvery trees that became his signature landscape motif. Ribot's panel titled Landscape, known as La Maison de Corot in Ville-d'Avray, suggests either a record of the site Corot immortalised or a direct homage to the elder painter's memory. Corot died in 1875, widely mourned, and a generation of French painters who admired his poetic naturalism made pilgrimage to his landscapes. Ribot, though primarily known for his figure work and kitchen scenes, demonstrated in occasional landscapes a comparable sense of quiet atmosphere.
