Landscape of a Lake Bank

This undated landscape study on paper, held in the Georgian State Museum of Theatre, Music, Cinema and Choreography in Tbilisi, is characteristic of Nesterov's sustained engagement with the Russian lake landscape as a subject of spiritual contemplation. The presence of the work in a Georgian collection reflects the complex dispersal of Russian art through institutional and private channels across the Soviet republics during the twentieth century. Nesterov's lake landscapes occupy a distinct place in his output: less overtly religious than his figure paintings, they nonetheless carry the same quality of hushed attentiveness — an invitation to stillness that the artist associated with the presence of the sacred in the natural world.
