Painted in 1860 and held at the Musée d'Orsay, Le Convalescent is one of Carolus-Duran's earliest surviving significant works, predating both The Assassinated and his mature portrait career by several years. At twenty-two, the painter produced a domestic genre scene that demonstrates his already developed ability to render the specific quality of recovery — the particular pallor and fragility of someone recently ill — with the empirical directness that would define his mature style. The subject of convalescence was a standard of French genre painting in the nineteenth century, the bedroom interior with its invalid providing opportunities to explore the relationship between interior light, the human figure, and the psychological atmosphere of recovery. Carolus-Duran's version brings to this conventional subject an intensity of observation that distinguishes it from formula: the convalescent's specific physical state — neither healthy nor dying but suspended between them — is rendered with a medical attention unusual for a twenty-two-year-old painter. Technical Analysis

The interior bedroom setting required Carolus-Duran to work with the indirect, diffused light of a sickroom — a different tonal challenge than outdoor observation or studio lighting. The convalescent's pallor against white bedding created a tonal situation where very subtle value differences carried all the physiological information. The paint handling is more measured than his mature directness, a twenty-two-year-old still developing the confidence that would later become his signature.
