Lois Gerl's House, Salzburg

Rudolf von Alt's 1889 depiction of Lois Gerl's House in Salzburg documents a vernacular urban building in the city that was then developing its identity as a major tourist and cultural destination — Mozart's birthplace already attracting visitors from across Europe. Alt visited Salzburg on numerous occasions and was consistently drawn to the city's distinctive architecture: a concentrated blend of Baroque ecclesiastical grandeur and densely packed medieval and early-modern domestic buildings climbing the hillsides beneath the Hohensalzburg fortress. Gerl's house, a private residential property, represents Alt's interest in urban fabric beyond the canonical monuments — the ordinary buildings that gave historic cities their texture and character. By 1889 Alt was in his late seventies yet still travelling and drawing with undiminished energy. His late Salzburg views carry the authority of an artist who had been recording the city for over half a century and knew its architectural fabric with intimate familiarity.

Working on paper, Alt captures the vernacular facade with attention to material texture — rendered plaster, wooden window surrounds, and traditional roof details rendered through careful graduated washes. The composition is frontal and documentary in intention, placing the building clearly within its urban context through the inclusion of adjacent street facades on either side.
