London: Whitehall and the Privy Garden from Richmond House by Canaletto

London: Whitehall and the Privy Garden from Richmond House

Canaletto·1747

Historical Context

This 1747 view of Whitehall and the Privy Garden from Richmond House, at Goodwood House in the Duke of Richmond's collection, was painted as a pendant to its eastward counterpart facing the Thames, creating a panoramic pair documenting London's governmental heart from the Duke's own residence. The Duke of Richmond, Charles Lennox, was one of Canaletto's most important English patrons; his Richmond House on the Thames at Whitehall was uniquely positioned for views both up and down the river and toward the Privy Garden. Canaletto painted both canvases in 1747, adapting his veduta method to the commission's specific requirement to document the duke's actual view from his terrace — a hyper-personalized application of the view-painting tradition that gives these works a particular documentary intimacy. The Privy Garden, once the private grounds of Whitehall Palace and by this date a public pleasure ground, appears in the middle distance with the characteristic English combination of formal garden geometry and relaxed social use. Goodwood House in Sussex, the Richmond family seat, retains the paintings as part of one of England's most distinguished aristocratic collections, including also a notable group of portraits and old masters.

Technical Analysis

The composition sweeps across the formal gardens and historic buildings of Whitehall with documentary precision. Canaletto renders the English architectural details with the same care he brought to Venetian palazzi.
