Painted in 1905, 'Los abuelos de mis hijos' — 'The Grandparents of My Children' — depicts Clotilde's parents, who would have been the grandparents of Sorolla's three children, María, Joaquín, and Elena. Antonio García, Clotilde's father, was the photographer who had given Sorolla his first professional support and whose household had been the painter's early Madrid base; his wife completed a couple whose significance in Sorolla's life extended well beyond biological relationship. By 1905 Sorolla had achieved the success that his early years under García's patronage had helped make possible, and a portrait of the older couple carries a quality of gratitude and affection that distinguishes it from purely professional commissions. The domestic subject — grandparents in the context of family — aligns with the personal painting strand that ran alongside Sorolla's public career throughout this decade.
