Historical Context

Andrea Previtali painted this Madonna and Child around 1523, continuing the tradition of Venetian devotional painting he inherited from his master Giovanni Bellini. Previtali spent most of his career in his native Bergamo, bringing Venetian techniques to the Lombard city The Madonna and Child was the most ubiquitous devotional subject of medieval and Renaissance art, present in every church and many private homes as a focus for prayer and spiritual contemplation.

Technical Analysis

The devotional panel displays the warm coloring and luminous technique Previtali derived from Bellini. The gentle expression and harmonious composition create a serene devotional image.
