Madonna and child with Saints Lawrence and Augustine by Paolo da Caylina il Vecchio

Madonna and child with Saints Lawrence and Augustine

Paolo da Caylina il Vecchio·1460

Historical Context

This Madonna and Child with Saints Lawrence and Augustine by Paolo da Caylina il Vecchio, painted around 1460 for the Church of Saints Nazarius and Celsus, represents the provincial but accomplished painting tradition of the Brescian region in the fifteenth century. Such sacra conversazione altarpieces, showing the Virgin enthroned among saints, were the standard format for Italian church commissions throughout the Renaissance.

Technical Analysis

The work reflects the solid, naturalistic approach of the Brescian school influenced by Foppa, with clearly defined figures arranged in a balanced composition appropriate to the altarpiece format.
