Marshal Maurice de Saxe (1696-1750)
Jean Etienne Liotard·1750
Historical Context
Marshal Maurice de Saxe (1696–1750) was one of the greatest military commanders of the eighteenth century—an illegitimate son of Augustus the Strong of Saxony who became Marshal General of France and won the decisive Battle of Fontenoy in 1745 against the combined British, Dutch, and Hanoverian forces. He was also a man of considerable cultural sophistication, maintaining relationships with leading artists, writers, and intellectuals, including Voltaire. Liotard's 1750 portrait, now in the Strasbourg Historical Museum—made in the year of the marshal's death—depicts a man at the height of his fame but already in physical decline. Strasbourg, as an Alsatian city at the junction of French and German culture, is an appropriate home for a portrait of this Franco-German figure. The painting's historical weight is considerable: it documents one of the defining military figures of Louis XV's France.
Technical Analysis
A military portrait of this scale required Liotard to render elaborate uniform details—epaulettes, orders, gold braid, and the Marshal's baton—with his characteristic precision. The balance between official military iconography and individual likeness is managed through careful attention to the face.
