Three dancing nymphs and a reclining cupid in a landscape
Antonio Zucchi·ca. 1772
Historical Context
Antonio Zucchi's Three Dancing Nymphs and a Reclining Cupid from around 1772 is a decorative ceiling painting by the Venetian-born artist who worked extensively in England under the direction of Robert Adam. Zucchi married the painter Angelica Kauffman and produced mythological decorative paintings for the great Neoclassical interiors that Adam designed. This oil on paper, attached to a plaster roundel, demonstrates the integration of painting within architectural decoration.
Technical Analysis
Zucchi's oil-on-paper technique, designed for installation in a plaster ceiling, demonstrates the light, graceful touch required for overhead decorative viewing. The pastel palette and delicate figure drawing reflect the Neoclassical decorative style that Adam promoted.
