Friedrich III (1463–1525), the Wise, Elector of Saxony
Historical Context
Lucas Cranach the Elder and Workshop's 1533 portrait of Friedrich III the Wise, Elector of Saxony, depicts the ruler who was Martin Luther's protector and the most important political supporter of the Reformation. Friedrich died in 1525, making this a posthumous portrait produced by the Cranach workshop to perpetuate the memory of the prince who had sheltered Luther at the Wartburg. The Cranach workshop produced numerous versions of this iconic image for Protestant institutions.
