Still Life
Georg Flegel·probably ca. 1625–30
Historical Context
Georg Flegel was a pioneering German still-life painter who helped establish the genre as an independent subject in early seventeenth-century Frankfurt. This still life from around 1625-30 demonstrates his meticulous approach to depicting food, vessels, and objects with an almost scientific attention to detail. Flegel was one of the first German painters to specialize exclusively in still life, creating a tradition that influenced later Frankfurt painters.
Technical Analysis
The oil on wood achieves remarkable precision in rendering different surfaces — glass, metal, ceramic, and organic materials — with subtle tonal gradations. The tight, controlled brushwork and clear lighting create an almost trompe l'oeil effect.
