Madame Jean-Baptiste Nicolet (Anne Antoinette Desmoulins, 1743–1817)
Jean-Baptiste Greuze·late 1780s
Historical Context
Greuze painted this portrait of Madame Nicolet in the late 1780s, depicting the wife of Jean-Baptiste Nicolet, the famous Parisian entertainer and theater director who ran the popular Nicolet Theater on the Boulevard du Temple. The portrait dates from the twilight of the ancien regime, just before the Revolution transformed French society. Greuze's sympathetic treatment of bourgeois sitters contrasted with the more formal aristocratic portrait tradition.
Technical Analysis
The oil-on-wood technique shows Greuze's refined late manner, with smooth modeling of the face and a warm, limited palette. The intimate format and direct, unaffected presentation reflect his preference for natural rather than formal characterization.
