Saints Michael and Francis
Juan de Flandes·ca. 1505–9
Historical Context
Juan de Flandes's Saints Michael and Francis from around 1505-09 is part of his series of panels for the cathedral of Palencia, where he worked after the death of his primary patron Queen Isabella I of Castile in 1504. The conjunction of Michael — the warrior archangel — and Francis — the humble beggar saint — in a single panel reflected devotional conventions of paired saints that complemented each other spiritually and compositionally. Juan de Flandes was a Flemish painter who came to Spain in the service of Isabella I, bringing the Northern European painting tradition to the Spanish court and creating the hybrid style called Hispano-Flemish that influenced Spanish painting for generations.
Technical Analysis
The oil on wood with gold ground combines Flemish precision in rendering armor, textiles, and facial features with a Spanish taste for rich gold backgrounds, creating a luminous devotional panel of remarkable technical refinement.
