Charles Beauclerk (1670–1726), Duke of St. Albans
Godfrey Kneller·ca. 1690–95
Historical Context
Sir Godfrey Kneller painted Charles Beauclerk, Duke of St. Albans, around 1690-95. Beauclerk was the illegitimate son of Charles II and the actress Nell Gwyn, elevated to the peerage as part of his father's lavish recognition of his mistresses' children. Kneller was the dominant English portraitist from the 1680s until his death in 1723, serving as Principal Painter to every English monarch from Charles II to George I.
Technical Analysis
Kneller's portrait demonstrates his efficient, confident technique with broad brushstrokes that rapidly establish form and character. The rich coloring of the costume against a dark background, with highlights on armor or silk, is characteristic of his Baroque portrait formula.
