The Investiture of Bishop Harold as Duke of Franconia (c. 1751-52) is an oil sketch for one of Tiepolo's greatest achievements: the ceiling frescoes of the Residenz in Würzburg, painted for Prince-Bishop Karl Philipp von Greiffenclau. The subject celebrates a medieval predecessor who combined ecclesiastical and secular authority. The Würzburg commission, with its vast staircase ceiling, is considered Tiepolo's masterpiece and one of the supreme achievements of Baroque decorative painting.
