Mary (1505–1558), Queen of Hungary
Historical Context
Jan Cornelisz Vermeyen painted this portrait of Mary of Hungary in 1520, depicting the future regent of the Netherlands who would govern the Low Countries for Charles V from 1531 to 1555. Vermeyen was a court painter who accompanied Charles V on his military campaigns, including the conquest of Tunis in 1535, which he documented in monumental tapestry cartoons. This early portrait captures Mary at age fifteen, before her political career.
Technical Analysis
The oil on wood panel demonstrates Vermeyen's precise, detailed technique inherited from the Netherlandish portrait tradition. The sharp characterization of the young sitter's features combines with careful rendering of courtly costume and jewelry typical of Habsburg court portraiture.
