Flora and Zephyr
Jacob de Wit·1743
Historical Context
Jacob de Wit's Flora and Zephyr from 1743 depicts the mythological union of the Roman flower goddess and the West Wind, a subject perfectly suited to his decorative ceiling paintings for Amsterdam's grand canal houses. De Wit was the undisputed master of Dutch decorative painting in the 18th century, filling the great houses of the Amsterdam elite with allegorical and mythological scenes in the French Baroque manner.
Technical Analysis
The oil-on-canvas painting features de Wit's characteristically light, pastel palette and fluent brushwork suited to decorative viewing from below. The dynamic composition with foreshortened figures ascending through clouds demonstrates his mastery of the illusionistic ceiling painting tradition.
