The Lamentation
Ludovico Carracci·ca. 1582
Historical Context
Ludovico Carracci's early Lamentation of around 1582 dates from the formative period of the Carracci reform in Bologna, before the founding of the famous Accademia degli Incamminati. The Carracci — Ludovico and his cousins Agostino and Annibale — sought to revitalize Italian painting by returning to nature and the study of the great Renaissance masters, rejecting the artificial conventions of late Mannerism.
Technical Analysis
The oil on canvas reveals the young Ludovico's search for a new emotional directness, combining Venetian warmth of color with Correggesque softness. The restrained composition and genuine pathos mark a departure from Mannerist artifice.
