View near Rouen by Richard Parkes Bonington

View near Rouen

Richard Parkes Bonington·ca. 1825

Historical Context

Bonington's View near Rouen from around 1825 captures the Norman landscape that was his primary working territory in France before his Italian journey. Bonington had studied in Calais under Louis Francia before moving to Paris and studying at the École des Beaux-Arts and with Gros, and the Norman landscape — with its distinctive skies, ancient architecture, and the broad Seine valley — was where he developed his characteristic approach to atmospheric landscape. His Rouen views were among his first successful exhibition works and established the combination of architectural observation and atmospheric light that would define his mature manner. Géricault and Delacroix both admired his work and were influenced by his approach to oil sketching.

Technical Analysis

The oil on millboard demonstrates Bonington's gift for rapid, luminous landscape notation, with fresh, broken brushwork and a bright palette that captures fleeting atmospheric effects with remarkable spontaneity.
