Historical Context

Caroline Fry's religious writings — above all her 1823 volume Christ Our Example, which went through numerous editions and was translated into multiple European languages — made her one of the most widely read devotional authors of the evangelical revival that transformed English Protestant culture in the 1820s. Lawrence painted her in 1827, three years before his death, capturing a woman whose influence extended far beyond the fashionable world that usually constituted his sitter list. The portrait, now in the National Gallery, demonstrates the range of Lawrence's patronage in his final decade: he painted not only princes and military heroes but also the intellectual and spiritual figures who represented other dimensions of Regency culture. Fry's evangelical convictions placed her in a tradition of serious Protestant piety that stood in conscious distinction from the worldliness of the court and aristocratic society Lawrence usually served, and the portrait's unusual subject among his commissions gives it a particular cultural interest as evidence of the serious religious current running beneath the surface of fashionable Regency life.
