Motiv beim Grein an der Donau
Rudolf von Alt·1842
Historical Context
Rudolf von Alt's 1842 view of the Danube near Grein captures a stretch of the river where the valley narrows dramatically through the Strudengau — a section of fast-flowing, rocky water that was among the most feared obstacles on the pre-regulation Danube. Grein, a small town on the north bank, possessed one of the best-preserved Baroque theatres in Austria and a historic castle overlooking the river gorge. The Strudengau had been a source of danger and drama for Danube navigation for centuries: its whirlpools (Strudel) and rocky reefs cost numerous vessels and lives until the late nineteenth-century river regulation works tamed the current. Alt was drawn to this section of the Danube for its combination of dramatic natural scenery, historical associations, and picturesque architectural elements — the castle, the town, and the river in its most energetic state. The work's provenance through the Munich Central Collecting Point suggests it passed through displacement during the Second World War.
Technical Analysis
The composition deploys the river as its dominant horizontal element, with the cliffs and castle of Grein providing vertical drama on the right bank. Alt's oil-on-canvas technique captures the particular quality of the Danube's turbulent grey-green water in this section, using textured brushwork to suggest the river's muscular current.
