Northfleet near Greenwich from around 1812 by Augustus Wall Callcott depicts a stretch of the Thames estuary in Kent. The river at this point broadened toward the sea, providing the expansive water views that Callcott excelled at rendering with his Dutch-influenced tonal technique. The Thames estuary was both a working waterway of enormous commercial importance and a source of atmospheric beauty that attracted painters seeking the particular quality of light that plays across wide, tidal water surfaces. Callcott's oil technique drew on Dutch marine and landscape traditions to produce silvery atmospheric effects and careful observation of light, combined with the romantic breadth of composition fashionable in early nineteenth-century British painting. The Ferens Art Gallery in Hull holds this work as part of its important collection of maritime and landscape painting.
