Albert Marquet returned to Notre-Dame under grey skies in this 1947 canvas, painted in the last year of his life. Having observed the cathedral from the Quai des Grands-Augustins and surrounding vantage points for over four decades, this final grey-weather view distils his relationship with the subject to its essentials. Grey-sky conditions over Notre-Dame — which dominate Paris for much of the year — stripped the subject of the pictorial drama that sunny or snowy conditions provided, requiring the painter to find his composition and interest in pure tonal organisation: the cathedral's stone against the sky, the Seine below, the embankments framing the view. Marquet's late work shows no weakening of his observational precision; if anything, the handling becomes more concentrated, each element reduced to its most essential tonal statement.
