Nuage blanc sur la forêt
Édouard Vuillard·1889
Historical Context
Nuage blanc sur la forêt (White Cloud over the Forest) of 1889 is a landscape subject from Vuillard's pre-Nabi period — the year before the movement's formation, when he was still working within a broadly naturalistic framework. The cloud and forest subject is unusual within his overall oeuvre, which was dominated by domestic interiors from his Nabi formation onward, and this early landscape shows the range of his pre-Nabi subjects before the movement's domestic program narrowed his focus. His treatment of sky and woodland at this date was not yet transformed by the Nabi flatness and patterning of his mature work — the cloud and the treetops were likely rendered with the atmospheric observation of his academic training rather than the decorative synthesis he would achieve from 1891 onward. The 1889 date makes this a transitional work, made in the year Sérusier showed the group his 'Talisman' and the Nabi movement crystallized around its core formal principles.
Technical Analysis
The cloud provides a light tonal zone against the deeper greens and browns of the forest canopy below. Vuillard renders the foliage in his mosaic touch, differentiating sun-struck from shaded areas through colour temperature variation. The spatial construction uses the vertical forest mass to contain the composition.
Look Closer
- ◆A large white cumulus cloud dominates the upper half with architectural, not atmospheric, form.
- ◆The dark forest mass below creates a strong horizontal contrast — white above, green below.
- ◆Vuillard's early naturalist brushwork is visible at the forest edge in individual tree rendering.
- ◆The deep saturated sky above the cloud intensifies the cloud's brilliant white by contrast.
