Nude

Nude, painted on canvas in 1927 and in an unknown collection, is a late work by Polenov — who was then in his eighties and had been one of Russia's most celebrated painters for five decades. The nude as a subject had a complex status in Russian art, where academic tradition demanded the nude as a test of figure-drawing mastery but where moral conservatism had limited its expressive range beyond the studio exercise. Polenov's late engagement with the subject is notable: by 1927, under Soviet cultural policy, the artistic nude was being reassessed in contradictory ways — simultaneously reclaimed as a class-neutral academic subject and suspected of bourgeois aestheticism. That Polenov continued to paint and explore formally in his ninth decade speaks to the sustaining creative energy that characterised his exceptionally long working life.

Oil on canvas, the work engages the classical figure-painting challenge of the reclining or standing nude with the experience of a painter who had spent decades developing his technical range.
