October (Scorpio)
Historical Context
Francesco Bassano the Younger's October (Scorpio), painted in 1601 for the Prado series, captures the autumn month of grape harvest completion, autumn ploughing, and the first preparations for winter. October's zodiacal sign Scorpio appears alongside genre scenes of the season's characteristic activities: the wine-making process is in full operation, fields are being ploughed for winter wheat, and the natural world shows the advancing signs of seasonal change in changing foliage and shortening days. October occupied the period after the summer harvest's completion and before winter's full onset — a transitional month that combined the warmth of lingering autumn with the first cold winds from the north. The Prado series of months represents one of the most complete surviving examples of the Bassano workshop's calendar programme, providing a comprehensive visual inventory of the agricultural year in the Veneto.
Technical Analysis
October's palette transitions from the warm golds of the harvest months toward cooler tones that anticipate November and December. The wine-making activities — pressing, pouring, barrelling — provide colourful foreground activity, while the autumn landscape background shows the characteristic colour changes of deciduous vegetation in the fall. The zodiacal Scorpio symbol marks the series' systematic calendar design.
