Historical Context
Painted in the summer of 1852 on the coast near Hastings, 'Our English Coasts' (also known as 'Strayed Sheep') was executed outdoors with the intensity Hunt brought to all plein-air work during his most committed Pre-Raphaelite years. A flock of sheep on the clifftop are depicted with the radical naturalism that had already distinguished 'The Hireling Shepherd' from the year before — individual animals differentiated, the landscape rendered blade by blade and rock by rock, the dazzling coastal light captured with uncompromising brightness. The painting was later acquired and exhibited in Paris, where it was widely seen as demonstrating the capacity of British painting to achieve a new order of naturalistic intensity. The Tate's version preserves one of the purest examples of Hunt's outdoor technique, in which the white ground, precise brushwork, and direct observation combine to produce effects of light that were genuinely unprecedented in British landscape.
Technical Analysis
Executed entirely outdoors on a white ground using the method Hunt had developed alongside Millais, the painting achieves an intensity of coastal light that distinguishes it from any studio-finished work of the period. Each sheep is individually characterized rather than treated as a generic flock unit. The cliff edge vegetation is painted with botanical precision, and the sea and sky establish light conditions that feel empirically recorded rather than conventionally arranged.
