pala del preziosissimo sangue by Andrea Mantegna

pala del preziosissimo sangue

Andrea Mantegna·1505

Historical Context

This Pala del Preziosissimo Sangue (Altarpiece of the Most Precious Blood) by Andrea Mantegna, dating to around 1505, is one of the master's final works, completed shortly before his death in 1506. The subject of the Precious Blood was of particular significance to Mantua, whose basilica of Sant'Andrea claimed to possess a relic of Christ's blood brought by the centurion Longinus. Mantegna, who served as court painter to the Gonzaga for nearly half a century, invested this local devotional subject with the archaeological precision and monumental grandeur that characterized his entire career.

Technical Analysis

The late altarpiece shows Mantegna's style at its most refined and concentrated, with the characteristic sculptural modeling softened slightly by age but retaining its fundamental clarity and precision. The composition demonstrates his lifelong commitment to rigorous spatial construction and the dignified, classicizing treatment of sacred subjects.
