Pallas Athena and the Herdsman's Dogs, painted in 1876 and now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, is one of Rivière's most accomplished early mythological paintings and among his finest surviving works. The subject derives from Homer's Odyssey, in which Athena descends to guide Odysseus but first encounters his loyal herdsman Eumaeus and his dogs — who, divinely sensitive, perceive the goddess's presence and cower rather than bark. Rivière seized on this moment as the perfect synthesis of his two great strengths: the mythological figure in classical drapery and the precisely observed behaviour of dogs responding to the uncanny. The Metropolitan's acquisition, which brought the painting to an American public collection, reflects the esteem in which this work was held.
Technical Analysis
Rivière constructed the composition around the dogs' instinctive submission — a radical change from their protective aggression — as the governing visual and psychological event. Athena's standing figure, likely helmeted and holding a spear, radiates an authority the dogs sense without understanding. The dogs' anatomically precise prostrate postures carry the painting's meaning as surely as any human expression.
