Panciatichi Assumption by Andrea del Sarto

Panciatichi Assumption

Andrea del Sarto·1523

Historical Context

Andrea del Sarto's Panciatichi Assumption from around 1522-1523 was painted for the Panciatichi family chapel and represents one of the finest altarpieces by the artist known as the "faultless painter." Del Sarto's work bridges the High Renaissance and early Mannerism in Florence Oil on canvas, increasingly preferred over panel in the sixteenth century, offered greater flexibility for large-scale compositions The work is now in the collection of Galleria Palatina in Florence.

Technical Analysis

The harmonious, balanced composition and warm, rich coloring demonstrate del Sarto's mastery of classical principles, with the ascending Virgin's drapery creating elegant rhythms above the animated apostles.
