Painted in 1915, this canvas depicts the Valencian fisherwomen who were as integral to the coastal economy as the men who worked the boats. Women in fishing communities along the Spanish Mediterranean traditionally performed the work of mending nets, processing and selling the catch, and carrying heavy loads — labour that took place on the beach in full sunlight and gave them a distinctive physical bearing and weather-beaten appearance. Sorolla had painted the fishing community since his earliest career, but these later studies show a more sustained anthropological interest in the social fabric of coastal life rather than purely optical spectacle. By 1915 he was also engaged with the Hispanic Society murals, which required him to document the regional types and customs of Spain with systematic thoroughness. The fisherwomen canvases belong to this documentary impulse, recording figures whose working dress, posture, and material environment would shortly be transformed by economic modernisation. Sorolla treated these women with the same visual respect he brought to official portraits, their labour given dignity through attentive observation rather than picturesque sentimentalisation.

Working figures in outdoor labour pose challenges distinct from posed portraiture: Sorolla captured characteristic working gestures — the forward lean of a net-carrier, the hunched concentration of a mender — through rapid but decisive drawing with the brush. Sunlit white headcloths and aprons serve the same optical function as the white boats: they organise reflected light around the composition.
