Pfarrkirche und Wehrturm in Perchtoldsdorf bei Wien

Rudolf von Alt's 1883 view of the parish church and defensive tower in Perchtoldsdorf, a market town southwest of Vienna, documents one of the most striking medieval fortifications in the Vienna Woods region. Perchtoldsdorf's late-Gothic parish church and its massive detached defensive tower — built in the 1450s–1470s during the period of Ottoman incursions — stand as monuments to the town's turbulent fifteenth-century history. The tower served as a refuge for the population during Ottoman raids and was the site of a notorious massacre in 1683 during the second Ottoman siege of Vienna. By Alt's time this history was part of the town's local identity, the tower preserved as a memorial. Alt was in his early seventies in 1883 and still travelling the surrounds of Vienna with the same topographic energy that had defined his career since the 1830s. His record of Perchtoldsdorf documents a suburban landscape that rapid urbanisation would soon transform beyond recognition.

The composition contrasts the robust, fortress-like mass of the defensive tower with the more refined Gothic architecture of the adjacent parish church, using the open market square as a foreground space that allows both buildings to be read clearly. Alt's paper-based technique handles the rough medieval stonework of the tower with drier, more textured brushwork than the smoother ashlar of the church.
