Pins au Pyla by Albert Marquet

Pins au Pyla

Albert Marquet·1935

Historical Context

The Dune du Pilat at Pyla-sur-Mer, the vast sand dune on the Atlantic coast south of Arcachon, provided Albert Marquet with a landscape subject of unusual scale and austerity: the massive sand formation covered in maritime pines offered a combination of monumental natural form and specific Atlantic coastal light that differed entirely from his river and harbour subjects. Marquet's 1935 canvas of pines at Pyla belongs to the same productive period as his Moroccan works, when he was moving between North African subjects and Atlantic French coast subjects with great facility. The Landes coast, of which Pyla forms part, has a distinctive character — the pines grow in tight plantations that were established to stabilise the coastal dunes, creating a regimented but atmospheric forest that contrasts with the wild dune and beach beyond. The commercial gallery context in which this work now exists suggests it was acquired through the art market rather than institutional purchase.

Technical Analysis

Maritime pines provide strongly vertical dark forms against the pale Atlantic sky and sandy ground, creating a composition of simplified vertical-against-horizontal contrasts. Marquet renders the pine trunks in warm red-brown and the canopy mass in dark, slightly blue-green, allowing both elements to read clearly against the pale coastal light. Sandy ground tones are warm ochre, shifted lighter where sunlight strikes through tree gaps.

Look Closer

  • ◆Maritime pine trunks in warm red-brown create strong verticals that punctuate the horizontal coastal landscape
  • ◆Pine canopy masses in dark blue-green provide the composition's densest shadows against pale sky and sand
  • ◆Sandy ground between and beneath the pines catches dappled light through the tree cover, producing variable warm and cool patches
  • ◆The Atlantic horizon, if glimpsed through or beyond the trees, provides a cool blue-grey horizontal that contrasts with the warm pine tones
