Polittico dei Gesuati by Sano di Pietro

Polittico dei Gesuati

Sano di Pietro·1444

Historical Context

The Polittico dei Gesuati by Sano di Pietro, painted in 1444, was created for the Gesuati order in Siena. Sano di Pietro was one of the most prolific painters in 15th-century Siena, maintaining the city's conservative Gothic tradition in an era when Florence had embraced Renaissance innovation. His polyptychs, with their gold grounds and gentle figures, continued the visual language of Simone Martini and the Lorenzetti brothers into the later Quattrocento.

Technical Analysis

The polyptych demonstrates Sano di Pietro's characteristic Sienese style with rich gold tooling, vibrant tempera pigments, sweetly expressive figures, and the ornamental sophistication of the late Gothic tradition.
