Portrait of a Woman by Bernardino Campi

Portrait of a Woman

Bernardino Campi·late 1560s

Historical Context

Bernardino Campi was one of the leading painters of late sixteenth-century Cremona, known for his portraits and religious works in a refined Mannerist style. This portrait of a woman from the late 1560s demonstrates the sophisticated portraiture produced in Lombard courts. Campi was also an important teacher whose pupils included Sofonisba Anguissola, the most celebrated female painter of the Renaissance.

Technical Analysis

The oil on canvas displays Campi's elegant Mannerist portrait style with smooth, refined finish and subtle coloring. The precise rendering of the sitter's costume and composed expression reflects Lombard courtly portrait conventions.
