Portrait of Cardinal Melchior de Polignac by Rosalba Carriera

Portrait of Cardinal Melchior de Polignac

Rosalba Carriera·1732

Historical Context

Cardinal Melchior de Polignac was a French diplomat, art collector, and scholar — a figure at the intersection of ecclesiastical rank, Parisian intellectual culture, and the collecting world that made Roman antiquities fashionable in the early eighteenth century. His portrait by Rosalba Carriera in 1732, held in the Gallerie dell'Accademia in Venice, would have been made during or after his extended stays in Rome, where he assembled the collection of ancient sculpture later purchased by Frederick the Great. Polignac belonged to the generation that bridged the Grand Siècle and the Rococo: educated in the manner of Louis XIV's court, he was active in the Académie française and corresponded with leading philosophers. Carriera's choice of pastel for a cardinal's portrait is itself notable — the medium, associated with intimacy and the private sphere, here dignifies a major ecclesiastical figure, suggesting Polignac's own aesthetic sophistication. The Venice provenance indicates the work remained in Venetian collections rather than following Polignac to France.

Technical Analysis

Rendering a cardinal's official crimson robes in pastel presented the same challenge as in oil: differentiating the red's various tonal registers without losing the warmth of the hue. Carriera addresses this by using cooler, more blended strokes in the shadow areas and lighter, almost pink highlights at the folds, maintaining chromatic unity while describing three-dimensional form.

Look Closer

  • ◆The cardinal's scarlet robes are rendered in pastel — an unusual choice for high ecclesiastical portraiture
  • ◆Polignac's scholarly and collecting activities are reflected in his alert, cultivated expression
  • ◆Cool shadow strokes in the drapery contrast with warmer highlights, giving the crimson three-dimensional volume
  • ◆Gallerie dell'Accademia provenance indicates the work entered Venetian institutional collections at an early date
