This double portrait depicting Elisabeth of Valois and her daughter Isabella Clara Eugenia is a complex image: Elisabeth was born in 1545 and died in 1568, yet the painting is attributed to Pantoja, who was born around 1553 and only established himself as court painter in the 1580s. The work is therefore either a posthumous reconstruction from earlier portraits or — more likely — a later combination portrait that superimposed two generations for dynastic or commemorative purposes. Elisabeth of Valois, third wife of Philip II, was beloved at the Spanish court; her early death at twenty-two cast a long shadow over Philip's reign. Her daughter Isabella Clara Eugenia, born 1566, went on to become Archduchess of the Spanish Netherlands and one of the most powerful women in Europe. Placing them together created a genealogical image linking a mourned queen to her accomplished heir — a form of dynastic consolation. The Basque Museum in Bayonne holds this unusual work as a window into the commemorative portrait culture of the Spanish Habsburgs.

Technical Analysis

The combination of two figures from different historical moments required Pantoja or his workshop to harmonise costume details and spatial relationships across different source images. The handling is characteristically precise in the costume passages and more generalised in the faces, suggesting a workshop contribution. Formal symmetry and identical dark backgrounds unify the two figures into a coherent dynastic pair.
