Portrait of Johanna Barbara de la Kethulle (....-1686) by Michiel Jansz. van Mierevelt

Portrait of Johanna Barbara de la Kethulle (....-1686)

Michiel Jansz. van Mierevelt·1639

Historical Context

This 1639 portrait of Johanna Barbara de la Kethulle (died 1686) at Geldersch Landschap en Kasteelen joins the 1653 posthumous Maurice portrait in the same institution's collection, creating a small van Mierevelt group within this custodian of Gelderland's historic estates. Johanna Barbara de la Kethulle would have been a young woman at the time of this portrait — likely in her twenties — from a noble family connected to the Gelderland aristocracy whose properties Geldersch Landschap en Kasteelen now manages. By 1639, van Mierevelt was 72 years old and within two years of his death, yet his studio maintained its production. Whether the master himself handled this commission or delegated to a capable assistant cannot be determined without technical analysis, but the work falls within the consistent quality range of his documented output.

Technical Analysis

A 1639 work from van Mierevelt's studio — among the very last before his death in 1641 — maintains the technical formula established over six decades of portraiture. Panel support allows the smooth blended surface his technique required. The young female sitter receives the warm-toned, smooth facial modelling appropriate to her age, with carefully observed lace and collar details and dark dress following Dutch Calvinist taste. The consistency of formula at this late date reflects the studio's systematic approach rather than individual creative development.

Look Closer

  • ◆The portrait's late date — 1639, two years before van Mierevelt's death — places it among his final documented works, when studio assistance would have been significant
  • ◆Lace collar details executed at this late date can be compared to his earlier work: any decline in the fineness of execution might indicate increased workshop involvement
  • ◆The young sitter's smooth facial surfaces are handled with the warm-toned modelling characteristic of van Mierevelt's approach to female portraiture throughout his career
  • ◆Gelderland noble provenance is reflected in the sitter's confident bearing and quality of dress, connecting this provincial noble portrait to the same tradition as van Mierevelt's more celebrated Orange-Nassau commissions
