Portrait of Ludovico Ariosto by Dosso Dossi

Portrait of Ludovico Ariosto

Dosso Dossi·1520

Historical Context

Dosso Dossi's Portrait of Ludovico Ariosto is among the most celebrated Renaissance portraits of a literary figure, documenting the appearance of the author of Orlando Furioso, the greatest Italian Renaissance epic. Ariosto served the Este court and was among the most celebrated poets of the early sixteenth century, his epic poem defining the cultural self-image of the Ferrarese court that patronized it. Dosso, as fellow courtier and friend to Ariosto, created a portrait that combines the psychological penetration of the best Renaissance portraiture with the warmth of personal acquaintance, giving the poet a dignity appropriate to his cultural eminence.

Technical Analysis

The portrait follows established conventions of the period, with attention to physiognomic features and costume details that convey social identity and status.
