Portrait of Willem Bentinck van Rhoon (1704-1774)

Willem Bentinck van Rhoon (1704–1774) was a Dutch statesman who served as a trusted adviser to William IV and William V of Orange, and was one of the most influential political figures in the Dutch Republic during its final decades of functioning independence. His portrait by Liotard, painted in 1755 and now in the Rijksmuseum, depicts a man at fifty-one who had spent decades navigating the complex politics of the Dutch oligarchic state. The Rijksmuseum holds this as part of its comprehensive documentation of Dutch historical figures, and the portrait functions as a political-historical document as well as an aesthetic achievement.
