Portrait of Willem IV van Oranje- Nassau (1711-1751) by Jean Etienne Liotard

Portrait of Willem IV van Oranje- Nassau (1711-1751)

Jean Etienne Liotard·1757

Historical Context

Willem IV of Orange-Nassau was Stadholder of the Netherlands from 1747 until his death in 1751, the first stadholder to hold the position across all seven provinces simultaneously. Liotard's portrait miniature on ivory, now in the Rijksmuseum, dates to 1757 — six years after Willem's death — and was likely made from an earlier likeness or as part of a commemorative project. Portrait miniatures on ivory were an innovation of the mid-eighteenth century, pioneered by Rosalba Carriera and quickly adopted across Europe; ivory's translucency gave flesh tones an unparalleled warmth and luminosity. Liotard executed relatively few miniatures, making this Rijksmuseum piece notable in his output. The posthumous date and the commemorative prestige of ivory together suggest a work destined for dynastic preservation rather than personal use.

Technical Analysis

Painted on ivory, a support that lends the flesh tones exceptional warmth through the material's natural translucency. The small scale demands extreme precision in the handling of features, dress, and any insignia. Colours are applied in thin washes that exploit the ivory ground as a light source.

Look Closer

  • ◆The ivory support's translucency is visible as a warm undertone beneath the painted flesh tones
  • ◆The miniature scale required Liotard to reduce his portrait vocabulary to essential defining features
  • ◆Official insignia and dress mark this as a formal dynastic likeness rather than an intimate portrait
  • ◆The posthumous date of 1757 suggests the work was made from an earlier study or existing portrait
