Édouard Manet and Carolus-Duran were direct contemporaries within the Parisian art world, both born in the 1830s, and their parallel but distinct careers represent two different paths through the complex terrain of French painting in the 1860s-80s. Manet, whose Spanish Baroque influences were as profound as Carolus-Duran's, pursued a confrontational relationship with Salon convention that made him the hero of the avant-garde; Carolus-Duran worked within the institutional system more comfortably while pushing its boundaries through technique rather than subject matter. Their mutual acquaintance and respect — they moved in overlapping social circles including Monet, Renoir, and the group around Stéphane Mallarmé — made a portrait exchange or commission natural. Carolus-Duran's portrait of Manet, dated around 1880, would have been produced in the last years of Manet's active career before his illness incapacitated him, capturing the older painter at the height of his controversial fame.
