Painted around 1820 and held by the National Museum in Wrocław (formerly Breslau), this canvas places Cornelius in the years immediately following his greatest early success — the Casa Bartholdy frescoes of 1816-17. By 1820 he was already in negotiation with Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria about monumental fresco commissions in Munich, projects that would come to define the next two decades of his career. Easel paintings from this transitional period show Cornelius working through compositional approaches that he would later scale up to architectural programmes: the handling of multiple figures in ceremonial or narrative groupings, the use of architectural setting as compositional backdrop, and the maintenance of legible narrative hierarchy across complex scenes.
