Historical Context

Jean Béraud occupied a distinctive niche in late nineteenth-century French painting as a painter of contemporary urban manners rather than landscapes or mythological subjects. His formation under Léon Bonnat instilled academic fundamentals, but his temperament drew him toward the streets and interiors of modern Paris. During the 1880s and 1890s he became a fixture of Parisian cultural life, attending the salons and gatherings he also depicted, which gave his social scenes an insider's authenticity. Béraud was particularly adept at rendering the coded behaviors of Parisian society — the correct tilt of a hat, the appropriate severity of a matron's expression, the studied nonchalance of a young boulevardier. His reputation rested on this combination of social intelligence and technical fluency, and collectors appreciated his canvases as accurate records of a vanishing world even as they lived within it.

Technical Analysis

The oil on canvas medium allowed Béraud to build his characteristic surfaces through layered glazes that impart subtle luminosity to skin and fabric. His palette tends toward restrained urban tones punctuated by the bright accents of fashionable dress.

  • ◆Note any architectural details that anchor the scene within a specific Parisian location
  • ◆Observe the spatial arrangement of figures and how proximity or distance conveys social relations
  • ◆Look for Béraud's characteristic treatment of reflected light on polished surfaces
