Painted in 1908, 'Reflejos de una fuente' — 'Reflections of a Fountain' — continues Sorolla's sustained investigation of water as a light-reflecting, colour-refracting medium in garden and domestic settings. Garden fountains were a recurring subject in his Madrid domestic paintings, and the specific optical properties of fountain water — moving, slightly disturbed, breaking reflections into dancing fragments — offered problems distinct from the open sea or the still surface of a garden pool. By 1908 Sorolla had thoroughly mastered the outdoor beach painting that made his reputation, and his garden fountain subjects show him applying the same optical rigour to a more intimate, enclosed environment. The work aligns with a broader Post-Impressionist interest in reflective surfaces as vehicles for chromatic exploration: Monet's water lily pond subjects from the same period represent the most famous instance of this tendency, though Sorolla's approach is more direct and less systematically dissolved.
